The 7 Best Family Portrait Locations in Torrance & the South Bay

By Peter Thornton Photography

When families ask me where we should take their portraits, my answer is always the same:

The best location is one that fits your family’s personality.

Whether you love ocean views, tree-lined parks, dramatic cliffs, or quiet walking trails, the South Bay offers beautiful locations for timeless family portraits.

Here are a few of my favorite places to photograph families throughout Torrance and the surrounding South Bay.

1. Torrance Beach

Torrance Beach is one of my favorite portrait locations because it offers a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful natural scenery.

The beach is typically less crowded than many Los Angeles beaches, making it ideal for families with young children.

Golden hour, just before sunset, provides warm light that creates timeless, natural portraits.

Perfect for:

  • Families

  • Children

  • Couples

  • Maternity sessions

2. Malaga Cove (Palos Verdes Estates)

If you’re looking for dramatic coastal scenery, Malaga Cove is hard to beat.

Beautiful cliffs, ocean overlooks, and walking paths create an elegant backdrop while still feeling natural.

The sunsets here are spectacular.

Perfect for:

  • Extended families

  • Engagement portraits

  • Fine art portraits

3. Wilson Park (Torrance)

Wilson Park offers beautiful green spaces, mature trees, and open fields.

It’s a wonderful option for young children because they have room to move and play, allowing genuine moments to happen naturally.

Perfect for:

  • Families with young children

  • Lifestyle portraits

  • Casual family sessions

4. South Coast Botanic Garden

One of Southern California’s most beautiful gardens.

Throughout the year you’ll find colorful flowers, tree-lined paths, and peaceful gardens that create elegant portrait backgrounds.

Please note that photography permits may be required.

Perfect for:

  • Families

  • Couples

  • Seniors

  • Professional portraits

5. Manhattan Beach Pier

For families who love the beach but also enjoy a classic Southern California look, Manhattan Beach offers an iconic backdrop.

The pier, ocean, and wide sandy beach create timeless coastal portraits.

Sunset sessions here are especially beautiful.

6. Veterans Park (Redondo Beach)

Veterans Park combines ocean views, landscaped gardens, and easy accessibility.

It’s one of the most versatile portrait locations in the South Bay.

The variety of backgrounds allows us to create several different looks during one session.

7. Your Home

Sometimes the best location isn’t a park or a beach.

It’s home.

Your children are comfortable.

Your pets can be included.

The surroundings become part of your family’s story.

Some of the most meaningful portraits I’ve ever created have been photographed in a family’s own backyard or living room.

When Is the Best Time for Family Portraits?

The best light is usually during the hour before sunset.

Photographers call this Golden Hour, when the light is soft, warm, and flattering.

Morning sessions can also work well, especially with young children who are happiest earlier in the day.

What Should We Wear?

I recommend coordinating colors rather than matching outfits exactly.

Neutral earth tones, soft blues, creams, greens, and warm colors photograph beautifully.

Avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns that can distract from the people in the photograph.

Before every session, I’m happy to provide wardrobe suggestions to help your family look its best.

My Approach

The best family portraits aren’t about perfect poses.

They’re about genuine connection.

Children laugh.

Parents interact naturally.

Families simply enjoy spending time together.

My goal is to guide you gently while allowing authentic moments to unfold naturally.

Those are the photographs that become family heirlooms.
